Twitter is the World’s Most Powerful Realtime Search Engine

If you’ve been using Twitter for any amount of time you’ll have soon become a Twitter power user and will have found that Twitter is assuredly the new world’s most powerful search engine. Of course it doesn’t compare to Google or Bing in terms of its search capabilities but it does in terms of it’s ability to tell you all about new revelations faster than Google even can.

Let me explain:

Google does index content relatively quickly so it can be found in Google search and they even have the placement of news results on their results pages to try and ensure they are showing the most up to date content where possible. However this is n ot for all search terms and sometimes things you want to find out aren’t there because they aren’t big news stories.

For example..

A few weeks ago all the sites hosted by Bluehost.com went down and anyone who turned to Google for the answer for this were not greeted with why. Instead people on Twitter who used Twitter search were greeted with exactly why Bluehost went down.

Now these small things aren’t the only things that spread across Twitter very quickly, there are larger things that do too. The larger things can most likely be found via Google too but they aren’t anywhere near as diverse as what Google provides and Google have even un-openly admitted this by adding the social results to their results pages when breaking news stories happen.

For example when the earthquake struck in Haiti Google fired up the social feature on the results page where you’d have seen many tweets all about the earthquake with a very diverse source of information. In Google’s case the only diversity they could give were there top 10 results (because they are most seen), the news results and social results.

To understand this fully what you really gotta do is next time something big happens head over to http://search.twitter.com and type in the same thing you’d type into Google and see how powerful it really is. However I do know this is a debatable topic, I have definitely decided Twitter is officially the World’s most powerful search engine. I even believe that you could use Twitter search for a huge percentage of your searches from here on in. What do you think?
